How to Plan Your Vasectomy in a Single Visit

You have made up your mind, you have thought it through, and you do not want more children. Here is how it works to get the consultation and the vasectomy in one visit:

1. Book online or by phone (weekdays), simply, with or without a medical referral.
2. Complete the health questionnaire. The physician reviews it. If we need more information, we will contact you. Depending on what you report, she may recommend a consultation before the scheduled day.
3. Choose the time that suits you for the procedure.

How much time off do I need after a vasectomy?

Most men need 2 to 5 days of rest. To respect the stages of healing, movement is limited for the first 36-48 hours. If you have a desk job, you can return to the office after 2 days. You could even resume working from home the next day or the same day — or take a nap, just for you.

If your job is physical and involves lifting, and you cannot easily delegate, you may need to wait 1 week before resuming all physical tasks. Returning to physical work too soon increases the risk of bleeding, pain, swelling and slower recovery.

For the week following the vasectomy:

• Avoid lifting loads over 10 kg; intra-abdominal pressure pushes on the tissues in the groin and creates irritation where the vas passes through the inguinal ring, an anatomical tunnel between the abdomen and the scrotum.
• Avoid standing for more than 2 hours at a time: the longer you stand, the more the scrotum tends to swell. Vibration can also irritate the internal tissues.
• Avoid anything that rubs or presses on the scrotal tissues — squatting or kneeling, climbing, jumping, running, and wearing a safety harness. Resume these activities gradually after 7 days.

Also consider wearing scrotal support so the weight of the testicles does not pull on healing tissue and the scrotum does not rub against your thighs; the return to activity will be that much easier.

If you are a pilot, wait 4 days before going to altitude: if there are micro-bubbles of air in the tissues, they expand at altitude and could be very uncomfortable.

When can I get back to sports?

Sports resume gradually after 1 week. We recommend cutting the intensity, volume and duration of your usual routine by 50%. Listen to your body, then progress as tolerated. Mild pulling near the groin with certain movements is normal. Wear athletic support without a rigid cup so gravity does not pull on still-healing tissue if you jump, run, move suddenly or stand for long periods. Contact sports and cycling can resume from the 2nd week.

What happens at a vasectomy appointment at our clinic?

Arrival. The nurse welcomes you and, if you are accompanied, may offer you medication to ease anxiety. You let it dissolve under the tongue and feel the effects within 15 to 30 minutes. Does a vasectomy hurt?

It is normal to feel a slight pinch at the start of the local anaesthetic; the needle-free version feels like a flick against the skin. Most patients are pleasantly surprised at how little it hurts and how effective the anaesthetic is. We hear it every day: “it was less bad than I thought.” On a scale of 0 to 10, and consistent with the published data on the mini-needle technique, most men rate the pain at 0, 1 or sometimes 2 during the procedure. The anaesthetic blend we use lasts a few hours.

Afterwards it is normal to feel a heaviness in the scrotum; it is mild to moderate and can last a few days. It is easily relieved with over-the-counter painkillers (acetaminophen and/or ibuprofen). When can I go back to work?

Does it change anything about sex?

No. Many men wonder about their long-term sexual health, particularly about vasectomy and erectile problems, before going ahead. The no-scalpel vasectomy is done in a safe zone, without touching the testicles or the penis. Erections, libido, orgasm and ejaculation stay the same. The testicles keep working as before, producing sex hormones. A vasectomy affects neither testosterone production, nor blood flow, nor nerve function — the factors generally associated with erection. In fact, the medical data show that erectile problems after a vasectomy are rare and generally unrelated to the procedure itself, and some men even report greater sexual satisfaction.

Am I sterile right away?

No. A vasectomy seals the 2 small tubes that carry the reproductive cells. Even though the passage is blocked, many sperm are already further along, near the exit, in the seminal vesicles where semen is stored ahead of ejaculation. Sperm can survive several weeks in these small reservoirs. You need a number of ejaculations to empty them, and sterility is confirmed by a semen analysis after 2 to 3 months.

What if I do not do the semen analysis after 3 months?

And recovery?

Allow 36 to 48 hours of rest, a week without physical effort and two weeks without contact sports. Most discomfort is mild and managed with acetaminophen, good support, a gradual return to activity and anti-inflammatories if needed. The minimalist no-scalpel approach lowers the risk of complications: less bleeding, fewer haematomas, less infection and less pain than the scalpel approach. It has become the standard of care — but that is not all: the occlusion technique makes the difference for long-term effectiveness.

How effective is it?
